Beyond HIPAA: Why Compliance Isn't Enough in the Fight Against Healthcare Identity Fraud

HIPAA has stood for decades as the cornerstone of patient privacy, establishing baseline safeguards for health information. But today’s threat landscape is exposing the limits of HIPAA-only thinking. Healthcare organizations are under siege from phishing scams, impersonation attempts, and ransomware extortion - sometimes from their own employees. In 2023 alone, over 133 million patient records were compromised in data breaches – a 156% increase from the year before. That’s an unprecedented onslaught (roughly 374,000 records breached per day) that underscores how much the risk has grown. Attackers increasingly target login credentials and remote access points: since 2018, hacking incidents and ransomware attacks in healthcare have skyrocketed by 239% and 278%, respectively.
